I remember in my teenage years, when my skin was oily, and I had a few blemishes: I always felt like I had to get my skin completely clean. I didn’t want to feel any trace of what I perceived as “oil” on my skin.
To that end, I used astringent pads repeatedly after washing my face – until my skin felt squeaky clean. When I think back on that now, I cringe.
Your skin needs oil
Yes, repeat that to yourself. In fact, repeat it out loud if you must. Your skin contains natural oils that are essential when it comes to keeping your skin healthy. These oils act as a barrier for your skin, keeping moisture in and toxins out. So stripping those oils from your skin is something you want to avoid.
How do you get rid of excess oil without stripping away the necessary oils?
One of the most common mistakes made by people with oily skin is that they try too hard to remove the oil. Stripping away too much oil can actually have one of two very negative outcomes.
1. If you are too aggressive when cleansing your skin – and you strip away your skin’s natural oils – your skin may overcompensate. By producing even more oil. So, instead of decreasing the skin’s oiliness, over-cleansing can actually exacerbate the problem.
2. Of course, the opposite can happen as well. By removing too much of the skin’s natural oils, your skin can become dry, red, and irritated. And, while some people may think that’s an improvement, remember that dry skin is not immune from blemishes – and red, irritated skin isn’t healthy either.
Gentle is always best
Except in rare cases – and usually under the direction and care of a dermatologist – a gentle cleansing regimen is always best. You want to remove dirt, toxins, and excess oils, while keeping the skin’s essential moisture barrier healthy.
Avoid abrasives, extreme water temperatures, and excessive use of astringents or foaming cleansers. While there is a time and a place for them, overuse can cause irritation. Stick with lukewarm water, a water-or milk-based cleanser, and a gentle cloth. Avoid rubbing too hard while cleaning and/or drying your skin.
Good advice for your whole body
It’s not just your face that needs its oil barrier; your whole body relies on natural oils to keep your skin healthy and supple. While the skin on your face does usually require extra care, remember that you need to be gentle on the rest of your skin as well.
