Why does skin glow during pregnancy?

Pregnancy ‘glow’ is really a thing. This phenomenon isn’t just folklore.  This radiance is connected to some of the physiological changes a woman’s body undergoes during pregnancy.

Instead, focus on hydration. Using a high-quality moisturizer can help manage both dryness and stretch the skin more comfortably. Products containing hyaluronic acid, glycerin, and ceramides are excellent as they help to lock in moisture and maintain skin barrier integrity without harsh effects.

For dealing with hyperpigmentation, products containing vitamin C, kojic acid, and azelaic acid are gentle and can be beneficial. These ingredients are generally considered safe during pregnancy and can help lighten dark spots without harsh bleaching effects. Always consult with a dermatologist before starting any new product to ensure it’s safe for your specific health situation.

Sun protection is another crucial aspect. The skin becomes more sensitive during pregnancy, making sunburn more likely. A broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher should be a staple. Look for mineral sunscreens containing zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, as these sit on top of the skin rather than being absorbed into it, making them safer options during pregnancy.
