Formulators have known for ages that hemp oil is beneficial to your skin. It’s a rich emollient and delivers a potent dose of essential fatty acids (EFAs). However, it wasn’t until CBD products exploded onto the market that deep clinical research began. Yes, much of this research focused on attempting to authenticate some outlandish “health claims” regarding cannabinoids. But a funny thing occurred. The evaluation and debate regarding CBD vs HEMP OIL delivered a wealth of research and results.
Phytocannabinoids are derived from the aerial parts of the plant (leaves, flowers, buds) and generally originate from hemp’s shorter and more notorious cousin the marijuana plant. But both the hemp plant and marijuana plants produce non-psychoactive cannabinoids that are beneficial, especially when used in skin care. Conversely, Cannabis Sativa (Hemp) Seed Oil is derived from the hemp plant’s seeds, that are naturally low in psychoactive compounds (i.e., THC) but which are still rich in a medley of helpful compounds.
Reviva recently launched two skin-calming products (Calming Renewal Serum and Calming Rejuvenation Creme) that target soothing the skin while also helping to heal or boost the skin’s natural moisture barrier. While these two products feature a wide of array of nourishing ingredients – each includes hemp seed oil as one of their primary emollients.
While developing these new products, Reviva evaluated the use of CBD vs Hemp Oil, and purposely chose the latter. Reviva opted to avoid the CBD bandwagon and instead stayed true to our core beliefs that efficacy and results matter. During formulation and testing, the use of CBD or Hemp Oil produced no discernible difference in skin benefits. But it was clear that CBD use brought along controversy – and so Reviva moved forward without CBDs. Reviva wanted to bring to market two great new products without having to deal with all the legal regulations and snafus that accompany CBD products. And we knew the benefits exist without the need for full CBD spectrum.
Cannabis sativa plants do offer superior calming
New clinical research has demonstrated that Cannabis sativa – even with undetectable cannabinol (CBN), cannabidiol (CBD) and cannabidiolic acid (CBDA) and absent tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinolic acid (THCA)* – still helps to soothe and alleviate many common skin inflammatory conditions (e.g., skin erythema, etc.) while also improving the skin barrier (improving hydration and reducing transdermal water loss). The limited study, through in-vivo testing and real-world clinical trials, indicates that Cannabis sativa is truly beneficial.
Of course, Reviva Labs’ chemists were well aware of Hemp Oil’s benefits for the skin. And our two new formulas layer in many other skin beneficial ingredients: argan oil, rosehip oil, grapeseed oil, Manuka honey, sea buckthorn, turmeric, shiitake mushroom, and much much more.
But it’s very nice to see that actual scientific research and clinical testing is verifying what Ayurvedic shamans and K-beauty aficionados have known for years – that eastern ingredients can deliver terrific skin benefits. We’re always happy to be proven “correct” by science. Though we’re also not afraid to leap ahead when we recognize unique ingredients hold the potential to efficaciously affect the skin.
