How important is it to use skin care products from the same brand?

Skin care can be confusing. There are so many different brands and lines available, and finding the right products for your skin can be challenging. So, for many of us, once we find a product or two from a specific brand we like, we tend to focus on other products from that same brand or line – because it just seems simpler. But it it necessary?

Mixing it up can be a good thing

Most skin care brands work hard to design products that supplement and complement one another. But since everyone’s skin is different, the more important thing is to find the products that work best for your skin. That may mean that you can find everything you need within one product line. But, more often than not, your skin care needs will take you to multiple brands as you find products that work better, or better fit your budget or philosophy.

For example, you may love the high-end cleanser that your facialist recommended. But if it’s not really in your budget, a little research will likely yield a cleanser that works just as well – or even better! – that won’t break the bank. Conversely, you may find almost every skin care need fulfilled at your local drug store, but discover a higher-priced, splurge-worthy night cream that works wonders for your skin. There’s no reason you can’t have both, as long as you can afford it.

Be aware of any “active” ingredients

There’s really only one exception when it comes to mixing it up, and it’s nothing a little vigilance can’t fix. If you’re using products with “active ingredients” – such as glycolic acid, salicylic acid, retinols, or peptides – you should stick with a single product line if you’re using more than one product containing an active ingredient.

Often, a brand will create a product line that complements and supplements, knowing which ingredients will work well together without causing irritation. If you are looking to use a line like this, adding something from a different brand – one that was not designed to work within the product line – you could experience irritation.

But if you’re cautious about the active ingredients you use on your skin – especially if your skin is sensitive – you should still be able to mix it up within different brands. Educate yourself on the ingredients you’re using, and be aware of any unwanted reactions that could happen when/if you mix certain ingredients.

Use what works

The most important thing with your skin care is that it works for you. While it may be nice to have matching bottles and jars on your counter, it’s more important that the products you use make your skin look its best; follow your personal philosophy (cruelty-free, etc); and fit within your budget.

And never hesitate to discuss the products you use with your dermatologist. She can help you determine if specific products are too mild or too harsh for your skin type – and even which products shouldn’t be used in the same regimen.
