Slugging is a skincare trend that has gained traction in recent years. It is a method of hydrating the skin that involves coating the face in a layer of heavy, occlusive products such as Vaseline, petrolatum, or Aquaphor. After the layer of product has been applied, some people will then “slug” their face with a damp towel, which helps to trap the moisture in the skin. It is thought to be beneficial for hydration and can help to reduce the appearance of dry, flaky skin. It is also believed to reduce the need for applying multiple layers of product, so is ideal for those with oily or acne-prone skin. However, it is important to use a product that is suitable for your skin type as some occlusive products can clog pores and lead to breakouts.

Slugging, also known as casual carpooling, is the practice of forming ad hoc, informal carpools for purposes of commuting, essentially a variation of ride-share commuting and hitchhiking. A driver picks up these non-paying passengers (known as "slugs" or "sluggers") at key locations, as having these additional passengers means that the driver can qualify to use an HOV lane or enjoy toll reduction. While the practice is most common and most publicized in the congested Washington, D.C. metropolitan area, slugging also occurs in San Francisco, Houston, and other cities.
