Phosphorous

« Back to Glossary Index

Phosphorus is a chemical element with the symbol P and atomic number 15. It’s a non-metal that multitalented chemists can’t ignore due to its crucial role in both nature and science. Present in nature in numerous forms, including white, red, and black, it’s primarily mined from rocks. It plays a pivotal role in life processes, for instance, it’s a vital component of DNA, ATP, and also in our bones and teeth. In agriculture, it’s a critical nutrient for plant growth, and is often a key ingredient in fertilizers. However, its excessive use can contribute to water pollution, demonstrating its double-edged sword nature.
