You will see this ingredient on the label of “warming” rubs; it is the active ingredient in oil of wintergreen but when listed as “methyl salicylate” it is probably synthetic. Pure oil of wintergreen is likely to burn the skin than the extracted “methyl salicylate.” As you might have guessed from the “salicylate,” this substance is related to aspirin.
