A derivative is a substance obtained from a source, i.e. an unadulterated part of a whole, an extract. Some cosmetic labels state “sodium lauryl sulfate (from coconut oil),” but SLS is not derived from coconut oil. It is a synthetic chemical which may contain SOME coconut fatty acid but is quite synthetic. It is not a derivative but a mixture or compound that contains various chemicals, one of which may be coconut oil. A compound is a ombination of chemicals that have formed bonds and may differ considerably from its base elements, e.g., salt or sodium chloride, which is nothing like either poisonous sodium or chlorine. A mixture is likewise a combination of different chemicals but does not form chemical bonds. Labels which state “derived from coconut oil” when describing a compound or mixture are inaccurate and misleading. Compounds tend to be more synthetic than derivatives and can be more sensitizing and toxic due to chemical reactions.
