For many centuries, Centella Asiatica – also known as Gotu Kola or Cica – has been used in traditional medicine for curing minor wounds, burns, and abrasions. It also serves as an effective anti-inflammatory for treating eczema.
In recent years, science has become interested in the plant, as it was discovered that it has many active compounds with numerous benefits. Pentacyclic triterpenoid saponins named asiaticoside, madecassoside, asiatic and madecassic acid (also referred to as centellosides) are the main biologically active compounds present in the plant.
Centellosides are known to stimulate the production of GAGs (glycosaminoglycans) and hyaluronic acid in the skin, which might be one of the reasons that Centella Asiatica Extract is found to have excellent skin moisturizing abilities.
