In skin care, trends come and go but the truly standout ingredients are always effective, versatile and here to stay.  Today I’ll review the latest “must have” ingredients we think you’ll want for your skin care routine.

One of the hottest new ingredients right now is Bakuchiol. Bakuchiol is sourced from the seeds of the babchi plant and is probably best known as a vegan alternative to retinol but without the hassle. Even the most sensitive skin can achieve smoother and brighter skin without the stinging, peeling or redness that retinol products can sometimes cause. And, because it stimulates cell turnover, bakuchiol smoothes fine lines and wrinkles as it improves skin’s texture.  Due to its popularity, this terrific anti-aging ingredient is really easy to find – it’s used in serums, moisturizers or even facial peels.

There is so much to say about Niacinamide, it’s hard to know where to start! First of all, it’s a powerful antioxidant with anti-inflammatory properties so it helps keep skin calm and protected against environmental damage. Second, it helps brighten dark spots and even out skin tone.  And, as if that wasn’t enough, if you have oilier skin, it helps reduce oil production and minimize the appearance of enlarged pores.  For normal to drier skins, it helps renew and restore moisture on the surface of the skin.  Due to all these extraordinary benefits, niacinamide is a skin care ingredient that will be around for a long time.

Managing hyperpigmentation can be tough but a rising star in the brightening category called tranexamic acid is making it a bit easier. Derived from an essential amino acid, tranexamic acid works by blocking the interaction between the cells that produce pigmentation and our skin’s surface cells.  As a result, it helps lighten hyperpigmentation and fade discoloration like sunspots or acne scarring. Plus, it’s so gentle that it works really well when combined or layered with other brightening ingredients like topical retinoids, vitamin c, and kojic acid.

If you struggle with acne, look for products with Azelaic Acid.  Azelaic acid is an antioxidant that is found in grains such as barley, wheat and rye. Due to its antibacterial properties, it’s great for acne prone skin and because it’s gentler than other acne-fighting ingredients like salicylic acid, it’s also highly recommended for sensitive skin. Besides getting rid of bacteria on your skin, it also helps to brighten skin discoloration and acne scarring.  With continued use, this ingredient will help keep pores clear, diminish blemishes and help brighten skin tone.

“What’s old is new again” could be the motto for our next group of ingredients:

Essential Fatty Acids – Essential Fatty Acids or EFAs are naturally found in some foods as well as in our skin.  In fact, they are a vital component of the lipid barrier that protects the skin’s surface from moisture loss and harmful bacteria.  EFAs become particularly important as our skin ages when the lipid barrier becomes compromised and we start to lose moisture and elasticity. By supplying our skin with topical essential fatty acids, like Omega-6 and Omega-3, you can naturally boost the protective layer of the skin while keeping it moist and soft.

Look for products that promote plant based oils like safflower, sunflower, rosehip and hemp oil, since they are particularly rich in omegas. Essential fatty acids also have anti-inflammatory properties that make them great for calming the skin and reducing redness. So be sure to drench your skin with some EFAs to keep your skin soft, glowing and younger-looking.
