Regardless of your skin type, dermatologists and other skin care experts agree that one of the worst things you can do to your skin is to treat it too harshly. While you may think your skin could use a little “tough love,” that usually causes more harm than good.
How can I tell if I’m being too rough on my skin?
A few good rules of thumb when it comes to skin care are to know your skin type, buy products specifically formulated for that skin type, and patch test any new products before using them regularly. But we all know that sometimes we can be taken in by pretty packaging, good skin care deals, and promises of glowing, youthful skin. If you see any of the following tell-tale signs, it means your skin care is too harsh for you.
Breakouts
If your skin is producing excess oil, there’s a possibility this is happening because of some harsh, drying ingredients in your skin care. When your skin produces excess oil, it gets trapped inside your pores with dirt, dead skin cells, and bacteria – and that’s when you see breakouts.’’
Dry and tight
Products that contain alcohol or detergents can really do a number on skin that is already lacking in natural oils. Regardless of your skin type, if your skin feels tight, dry, or itchy, something is irritating it – and it’s too harsh.
Greasy and shiny
Just as you don’t want your skin to be red, itchy, and dry; you don’t want it to feel greasy and shiny either. If your skin is naturally oily, then a heavy moisturizer is too much – and can lead to clogged pores and breakouts.
Redness and/or rashes
Anytime you even suspect your skin care or makeup items of contributing to a skin rash, discontinue use and consult your dermatologist. There are many ingredients used in personal care products (such as fragrances, dyes, and even some natural extracts) that can cause allergic reactions. If your skin is sensitive or you have known allergies, you want to be especially cautious – better safe than sorry!
What about exfoliation?
Exfoliation can be wonderful for your skin. In fact, it’s an important part of just about any skin care regimen – as long as you’re using the correct type of exfoliant and not overdoing it. Depending on your skin type and the type of product you’re using, you can exfoliate daily – or just once a week. The important thing to remember is not to overdo it. If you notice excessive dryness, irritation, redness, or sensitivity, chances are you’re exfoliating too frequently, too aggressively, or using a product that’s inappropriate for your skin type. If this happens, take a break from exfoliation for a while, and soothe your skin with some green tea extract or another anti-inflammatory. Allow your skin time to build up your natural oils again – and make sure to keep skin hydrated.
Sometimes skin care can seem counterintuitive
Sure, it may seem like a harsher cleanser will remove that excess oil that is causing your breakouts. But, did you know that you can dry out your skin too much – causing your skin to overcompensate by producing even more oil? The secret to getting (or keeping) great skin is to find the right balance. Oily skin still needs to be moisturized, and dry skin doesn’t necessarily need to be slathered with a heavy moisturizing cream. One of the best ways to tell if you’re on the right track with your skin care is if you see visible signs of improvement. If your skin is not improving (or is getting worse), it’s time to see your dermatologist. She will be able to recommend a proper skin care regimen to help you get your skin healthy.
