Webinar by Reviva Labs recorded June 27, 2024 - It seems like every other week there’s a new trending skincare routine or gadget. We’ll look at some of them and offer advice on which might help, and which might hurt.
Hey everyone! Welcome to today’s webinar. I’m Jocelyn, and if you’re like me, your TikTok feed is flooded with all kinds of skincare tips—everything from slathering on snail mucin to the wonders of gua sha. But here’s the million-dollar question: Are TikTok trends really good skincare guidance? Let’s break it down!
So, TikTok can be an absolute treasure trove of advice, and yes, you can learn some pretty cool things. But remember, it’s also a place where trends blow up faster than you can say “hyaluronic acid.” Some trends are legit, but others… let’s just say, your skin deserves better.
Let’s start with the good stuff. Some TikTok trends actually work! For instance, dermatologists have come on TikTok and shared great tips—like the importance of sunscreen (seriously, SPF is your BFF), how retinol can do wonders for anti-aging, and the benefits of incorporating simple, effective ingredients like niacinamide into your routine.
These are tried-and-true principles in the world of dermatology. If a licensed dermatologist is behind the advice, it’s probably solid. Just make sure you check their credentials, though!
But then… there are the trends that make you go, “Wait, what?!” Like when people were slathering their faces in lemon juice or using toothpaste to treat acne. I’m sure you’ve seen this one, right? Here’s the deal—just because it’s trending doesn’t mean it’s safe.
Lemon juice, for example, is super acidic and can mess with your skin’s pH, leading to irritation and even burns. Toothpaste? That’s meant for teeth, not your face! These are the kinds of trends that make dermatologists cringe.
One major problem with TikTok is the “one-size-fits-all” mentality. Everyone’s skin is unique. What works for a 16-year-old with oily skin might not work for someone in their 30s dealing with dryness or sensitivity. TikTok doesn’t always give you the full context, and a quick 15-second clip doesn’t tell you the long-term effects.
Then there’s the issue of influencers promoting products. Now, I’m not saying all influencers are out here giving bad advice, but some are just pushing whatever’s trending or sponsored. They might rave about a product because it’s cool, but that doesn’t mean it’s clinically proven or safe for your skin. Always take product recommendations with a grain of salt—research it, look at real reviews, and, if you can, check with a dermatologist.
So, how do you navigate all this? It’s simple. If you see a trend, ask yourself a few questions:
- Is there scientific evidence to back it up?
- Who is sharing this advice? Are they a licensed professional, or just someone with good lighting and a ring light?
- Is this something you’d feel comfortable talking to your dermatologist about? If not, that’s a red flag!
TikTok trends can be fun, and they might even introduce you to some cool new products or techniques. But always remember: your skin is unique, and it deserves thoughtful care. Don’t just jump on a trend because it’s viral. Do your research, listen to the experts, and be kind to your skin.
So, the next time you see a TikTok trend that promises to transform your skin overnight, ask yourself: Is this really skin-care… or just hype?
